The Know It All Yogini and Other Stuff

This is not much of a post folks, it’s really just a few quick updates. First of all, I am adding a new section to The Know It All Mom site called Just Breathe, chronicling my life as viewed from the yoga mat and my pending quest to complete yoga teacher training in the year 2013. Stay tuned. Yoga has a way of making me think differently…who knows what might come out! In the meantime, take a quick glance at http://theknowitallmom.com/just-breathe/ and about some of my past yogic revelations.

Second, I am still accepting guest blog posts. If you have an article or an idea you’d like to publish, let’s chat. Contact me: tkiam@theknowitallmom.com. I am nice. I want your stuff. I promise to be kind.

Finally, I would love your feedback. The Know It All Mom is being revamped, enhanced, updated, etc. Your suggestions are welcome. Let me know what you think. :)

Life Lessons from Bethenny Frankel

Bethenny Frankel with Skinny Girl Margaritas - Yum!

I have a secret… Somewhere, way, deep, deep down, in my heart of hearts, I believe that Bethenny Frankel and I are soul-mates. Given the opportunity for a chance meeting, I know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that we would quickly and forever bond over our many shared interests: fashion, yoga, cocktails, and of course, our families. My new BFF and I would chit-chat late into the night like long-lost old friends, all the while sipping Skinny Girl Margaritas, my convenience cocktail of choice, which I discovered this past summer on holiday in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California (the heart of wine country), when the thought of another Zinfandel, as delicious as they are in those parts, just didn’t cut it. Ahhh, the Skinny Girl over ice, savoured while sitting in the sun with the Russian River floating by… But I digress. Anyone who has read my blog in the past knows that I have been absentee over the past year or so. I took on a part-time contract – you know, a day-job, career-oriented kinda’ thing – that ballooned into something all encompassing. I have lost all balance. No writing. No yoga. Sadly, no fun. But then, just the other day, like a beacon calling to me from out of the blue, I received an email from…you guessed it….Bethenny Frankel! Okay, not her exactly, but someone in her PR camp. And because of our destined-to-be-friends-forever-starting-someday-in-the-not-too-distant-future relationship, I thought I would pass the link they sent me along to all of you. It reminded me not only to find a little time for yoga, but for all of those things I love that I have let slide, like this blog. So please, pour yourself a glass of Skinny Girl and check out the following link, and then step away from the computer, like I plan to do, and go do something for yourself that you haven’t done in far too long. http://www.everydayhealth.com/fitness/bethenny-frankels-secrets-to-staying-fit.aspx

Getting back to “Me”

To be honest, and I’m all about brutal honesty behind the comforting veil of this blog, I am in a rut. Since returning from Europe I’ve felt displaced and out of sync; I am floundering and undirected. So here, now, for every-one’s eyes, is a list (a l…o…n…g list) of things I need to get back to Me:

I need more yoga. I need to stretch, breathe, bend and focus.

I need to write more, blog more, read more.

I need to find the eloquence of Earnest Girl, the honesty of Her Bad Mother, the commitment of PhD in Parenting and the moxy of the Yummy Mummy Club.

I need my husband to come home from his business trip. Things are better with him by my side.

I need to move. My place of residence and my body.

I need more tea, less coffee.

I need to watch less TV, eat more fibre, get more sleep.

I need to have a long, leisurely lunch with my girl-friends.

I need a FAB new pair of shoes. Something with heels. Something impractical. Something red.

I need my new 10-week-old kitten to overcome the retrovirus ravaging his body.

I need to judge less, embrace more and just say, “Yes.” What I need is an attitude adjustment.

I need to learn a craft, something right-brain oriented and therapeutic in nature: sewing, knitting, perhaps découpage?

I need rain. Not just any rain, but a heavy, cleansing, deluge from the skies to wash away the malaise and make everything new again.

I need fresh flowers on my table.

I need to de-clutter. My house. My closet. My mind.

I need a glass of fine red wine. Blasted Church vineyard’s Nothing Sacred would do very nicely.

I need fruit, organically grown and fresh from the trees of the interior of B.C. No hot house fruits need apply.

I need to do better. Just two weeks back into a ‘Regular Schedule,’ and this is what I have fed Little Miss over the past 36 hours: Take-out Chinese food for dinner last night (including deep-fried chili chicken wings, which, I suspect, are not really Chinese); a Starbucks ham-and-cheese breakfast sandwich and chai tea latte for breakfast this morning; topped off with a left-over dry ginger beef and Chow Mein (veggie Chow Mein, mind you, my one saving grace) for lunch today. I am contemplating pancakes for dinner tonight. I need to be less lazy. I need my “Good Mom” badge revoked.

I need to express patience when I don’t have it, gratitude for all of my blessings and to exude pure joy at the many, many little things that make me happy everyday. I need to remember these.

But mostly, I need to be myself. I need to let that be enough.

Expand the Harmonious

…or, Life Lessons from my 12 Year-Old

…or, Patience, Thy Name is Christie….NOT!

I am not a patient person. I know this about myself. Lately, I have been less patient than I care to admit. My husband is away every week; my work obligations are soaring; my Little Miss’ year-end school commitments and activities are peaking in a flurry of assignments, dress rehearsals, recitals and concerts; and a beloved family pet passed on after a sad week peppered with multiple trips to the vet. I am frazzled. Case in point: Me, at the end of last week, attempting to fulfill the school-day-mom routine I preform Monday through Friday, September through June, in order to get my Little Miss out the door on time.

It went like this:

Me: Please hurry.

LM: I’m hurrying.

5 minutes later…

Me: Are you ready? Are you hurrying?

LM: Yes Mom, I said I’m hurrying.

2 minutes later…

Me: Is your bed made? Have you finished breakfast? Where are your shoes? Are you watching the time? We only have 5 minutes!

LM: (With a heavy sigh for dramatic effect) No Mom. Not yet. On my feet. Yes. I know!

Me: (Not listening) You know you need to make your bed and we have to leave and you’re not hurrying!

LM: Mom…I-AM-HURRYING!
